PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY October 5 2009 to October 11 2009 Monday October 5 Car Parkaeology There's been news, over the weekend, about the site of a stone circle not far from today's Stonehenge. But is this really a new discovery? I'm sure I've heard about it before. I'm also dubious about the idea that it was created as part of some complicated funeral procession. It makes me think of archaeologists, 3,000 years from now, finding the remains of a car park and providing a confident explanation: "For the primitive folk of the 21st century, this place of worship was where shiny metal boxes on wheels were sacrificed daily, to the great god, Payun D'Spley". Tuesday October 6 Risks for Rusks While we wait for Nasa to bomb the Moon later this week, the latest word from CERN is that scientists hope to switch back on their Large Hadron Collider in November. I don't expect the Moon will be seriously damaged, nor will this experiment in Switzerland really open a fissure in the fabric of space and time. Both projects, though, seem to be playing fast and loose with forces we don't yet fully understand. Wouldn't it be nice if someone, somewhere was willing to take similar risks in an effort to help feed the hungry or heal the sick? Wednesday October 7 Blue Moon Fifty years ago today, a Russian space probe sent back the first pictures from the dark side of the moon. Nine years later, the astronauts of Apollo 8 witnessed it with their own eyes. I don't pretend to understand precisely why we only ever see one side of the Moon from here but, then, even NASA scientists can't fully explain why the dark side of the Moon has so many more meteor craters. They just cite them as the reason why Friday's missile will do no harm. They're probably right. But I still think they're wrong to do it! Thursday October 8 With This Ring... On Earth, the equinox happens twice a year. On Saturn, it takes place once every 14 years or so. It is taking place right now. As it tilts in its orbit, Saturn's rings become 'edge on' to us. That's why we haven't been able to see them for some weeks. How strange that, at such a rare moment, the Spitzer space telescope should reveal the existence of an enormous additional outer ring. Saturn, traditionally represents limitation and 'structure'. To me, this strongly suggests a time when we all need to think again about what's possible and redefine our boundaries. Friday October 9 Golden Archaeology Dear Jonathan, Will archaeologists, 3,000 years hence, dig up McDonald's and conclude we followed a cult of Golden Arches? Brenda Dear Jonathan, If you felt you 'recognised' that circle near Stonehenge, it may be because of the recent episode of the TV show 'Time Team' where we found the henge ditch. Saturday October 10 Your Week Ahead Although Mercury stopped slipping backwards through the sky a couple of weeks ago, it is only now returning to the same sector of the zodiac that it had reached in early September. That should bring the resolution of many outstanding issues - especially ones that involve money, communication, education or legal procedures. Meanwhile, in other news, Jupiter changes direction this week. Since mid-June, the planet of hope, adventure, justice and jollity has been retrograde. Sagittarians and Pisceans will feel the benefit of this change most strongly, but all who are looking for inspiration should soon attain it more easily.
