PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY September 20 2010 to September 26 2010 Monday September 20 Spaceship Earth The phrase, Spaceship Earth, first became popular in the 1960s. It nicely conveys the fact that we are all passengers aboard the same vessel, spinning as it hurtles along at a shocking speed. Yet, by comparison to, say, the Starship Enterprise, ours is more of a cruise ship. We are locked into a steady, predictable orbit. Once a year, at much the same time of year, we see similar sights through the window of the sky. These coincide with changing seasons and newly-emerging moods. This week, the equinox inspires a worldwide enthusiasm for overcoming imbalance and clearing clutter. Tuesday September 21 Following the Caul Dear Jonathan, I was born with 'the caul'. What does that mean? Dee Dear Dee, The caul is a thin membrane that can occasionally cover the face and head of a newborn. A seafarer's superstition suggests that a sailor who owns a caul will never drown. Apparently any caul will do. It need not be one that the sailor was born with. Many cultures attribute mystical power to those born 'with the caul'. I've not researched this enough to determine a view. Would any readers born 'with the caul' care to confirm (or refute) the idea that it's lucky? Wednesday September 22 The Way We Weren't Hi Jonathan, At a judo camp I found myself walking up to a stranger and asking her age. She said 34. I said, 'Me too'. It turned out that we were both born in October, on the same day! Then someone else asked us if we were twins. We had the same hair colour and style and looked very alike in our judo outfits. Eleanor Dear Jonathan, I was born the same day as Barbra Streisand, about 30 minutes later. Believe me, she got all the 'goodies' bestowed that day. I don't think there's any truth to 'astro twins'. Ruth Thursday September 23 Rule of Thumb Unusually, there are two Full Moons in Aries this year. The first becomes exact today at the beginning of the sign of the Ram. The next one, in October, happens at the end of the same sign. To get a rough idea of how 'big' a sign is, go out after dark and hold your thumb at arms length till it covers the Moon. That's roughly one of the 360 degrees in the zodiac. Each sign is thirty degrees (or thumbs) wide. To the side of the Moon, this evening, a handful of thumbs away, you can see Jupiter! Friday September 24 Diversity Challenge Dear Jonathan, I am a Cancerian. Am I compatible with people born under my own sign? Victoria Dear Victoria, No sign is ever 'incompatible' with any other zodiac sign. Nor, for that matter, are any two human beings ever completely 'incompatible' with each other. It all depends on how hard both parties want, or are willing, to work... and on what they need to learn from each other. Some signs, of course, get along more easily. Generally, we all identify well with folk who share our sign. But a life without challenge may not be much of a life! Saturday September 25 Your Week Ahead Jupiter has just come closer to the Earth than at any time in the past 47 years. Whilst that's hardly going to make it glow like a space-craft, it explains why the planet of hope and justice now looks quite so bright each evening. Not far from Jupiter, there's another planet, fainter and harder to see. You'll need a telescope or binoculars to make Uranus visible, but the planet of innovation is worth looking out for. And there's a special reward for insomniacs and early risers this week. Mercury, usually elusive, is clear in the east before sunrise.
