I confused some Twitter followers recently by saying I was back from Peru when in this space, I was speaking as if I was still away. I actually returned a while ago but let the 'travelogue' here continue. It seemed too odd to write 'some days ago' when, at the time of writing, it was actually 'today'. Yet when I write forecasts in advance, I often say 'today', meaning the 'today' on which you will be reading it, not the 'today' on which I am writing it. Maybe it's time for a book on the etiquette of time travel! Tuesday May 10 Ten Years After Around September 19, 2001, I flew to New York and went straight to the rubble of the Twin Towers. I stood for hours, with hundreds of people; mainly relatives of the missing. A few days later, I wrote, 'The repercussions of September 11 will echo down the decades. History will mark it out as a one-off. Nothing so vast will happen again. There may be more terrorist attacks but there will be no great escalation in the conflict.' After much reflection, I feel confident to repeat that prediction. The death of Osama Bin Laden changes everything... and nothing. Wednesday May 11 Time for Elevensies Jonathan, People should stop putting such emphasis on dates like 11.11.11. It is, after all, just a number! 11 November, 2011 is also 14 Heshvan 5772 (Hebrew Calendar), 14 Dhu Al-Hijjah 1432 (Islamic) and 2455876.5 (Julian Day Count). Spiritual enlightenment will happen when people start taking responsibility for their own growth, not when they sit and wait for some magical date or portal to do the work for them! To forecast an ascension to the throne is also to predict the date of a demise.' The Queen is 85. It is possible she may choose to take a step back. And Prince Charles may step aside - making the Duke of Cambridge king surprisingly soon without any demise taking place. But if you look at the predictions, you'll see they all make great play of the fact that today is Friday the 13th. In most English-speaking countries, this is considered an unlucky day. One of the many things I learned during my trip to Peru is that, in most Spanish-speaking lands, the day to dread is Tuesday the 13th!
