PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

January 10 2011 to January 16 2011

Monday January 10
Changing names?

I'm still not sure whether to change the name of Cancer to Cancerian. I couldn't alter it anywhere other than in my own work. Other astrologers probably wouldn't follow suit. And my predictions appear in many different newspapers, magazines and websites across five continents. That's a lot of editors and production people to explain myself to. I'm still willing to do it, but I'd like to be sure, first, that I really am acting on the wishes of the majority of my Cancerian readers. If you're born under this sign and you've got a strong opinion, please share it!

Tuesday January 11
11.11.11

How significant is today's date? It contains a lot of number ones, though not as many as we're going to get on 11.11.11. My numerologist friends are excited, as are some of the mystics I know. Apparently, when people undergo a phase of 'advanced, rapid spiritual self-development' they often find themselves spontaneously glancing at their watch or clock at 11.11am, just as all those ones come up in a row. But, to an astrologer, these are just numbers on a clumsy civil clock or calendar. More exciting (and auspicious) is today's harmonious alignment from the Sun to Neptune.

Wednesday January 12
Name Game

If you were born under Aries, you're technically an 'Arian', though I don't think that this was quite what Hitler had in mind when he spoke about the Aryan race. I, personally, prefer to say 'Aries person'. Likewise, I don't change Scorpio to Scorpion, Gemini to Geminian, Virgo to Virgoan or Capricorn to Capricornian. I'm happy though, to turn Libra to Libran, Taurus to Taurean, Sagittarius to Sagittarian, Aquarius to Aquarian and Pisces to Piscean. In speech, if not in text, I've long changed Cancer to Cancerian. I've never been sure, though, what Leo is 'supposed' to turn into...

Thursday January 13
Getting the "gist" of it

I rather fear that, recently, I have given my Japanese translators a hard time. There has been much discussion, here in this space, about whether we should change the name of the sign, Cancer. I doubt this makes much sense to people who speak a different language. I will try to be more thoughtful in future. But just before we completely leave the peculiarities of the English language, I have a question. If you practice biology you're a biologist. If you're keen on archeology, you're an archeologist. Is my subject the only kind of 'ology' that produces an 'ologer'?

Friday January 14
Resigned

Dear Jonathan,
If you change the name of the sign of Cancer, can other signs ask you to change their names too? I'm a Virgo. I don't want to be thought of as repressed or inexperienced. Should we change Aquarius the Water Bearer in deference to flood victims? Vegetarian Leos might get upset because they don't want to be seen as carnivorous. Capricorns might feel slighted because their sign, a fish goat, is obviously a product of genetic splicing or radioactive materials dumped in some stream somewhere. While we're about it, Scorpions aren't particularly nice creatures either. Impan

News update: There's lately been a lot of talk about 'new dates' for the zodiac signs and even a 'new sign'. This, though, is nothing 'new'. It's the same old nonsense that gets trotted out every 20 years or so by astronomers who think the twelve signs of the zodiac must be the same as the 12 constellations (or star groups). Actually, they're not and may never have been - although once they correlated more closely. 'Aha,' they think, 'Astrologers must be too stupid to notice this.' So without doing any more research, they issue a press release or write a book. You can add your comment to this on our Facebook page
