Tibet
|
I rarely attend protests or support political movements. My professional duties require me to remain objective. You simply can't be neutral if you've got a passionate belief that something is right or wrong. But last week was Tibetan New Year, and several Tibetan friends invited me to join them at a demonstration outside the Chinese Embassy in London. I can't help but feel some sympathy for this cause - no matter how hard I try to stand back - so I went along. It actually turned out to be a surprisingly intense experience. Tomorrow I'll tell you more about what happened.

Protest Song
|
Last Wednesday, I stood with about 100 Tibetans, demonstrating outside the Chinese Embassy in London. They stood on the far side of a busy road, yelling angrily at the building. At one point, apparently riled by an antagonistic gesture from the embassy window, many stormed across the street. They got as far as a pedestrian refuge in the middle. From nowhere, 50 police appeared. The shouting got louder. I began to fear arrests, even violence. Suddenly, they burst into a haunting, meditative song, their national anthem. Then they patiently waited for the traffic lights to change... and went home.

Balancing Act
|
Dear Jonathan,
Please can you write about the alignment between Uranus and Pluto, which continues till 2015. I have found two articles on the internet that scare me. Raffaella
Dear Raffaella,
Both articles are clearly written by knowledgeable astrologers yet both express strong political views. As I said in this space on Monday, I question the right of any astrologer, including myself, to hold political views. Practitioners of this profession have a moral obligation to be objective or, at least, to declare their own bias. Tomorrow, I'll say more about Uranus and Pluto and I'll try to be balanced.

Fears for Years
|
Yesterday, a reader called Raffaella asked me to write about the 90 degree angle between Uranus and Pluto which began in 2010 and continues to 2015. She is worried about some of the things she has read on the internet about this alignment. It has been blamed for several of the world's current woes, especially the economic problems faced by so many countries. There are some who say it 'proves' that we're going to see global financial meltdown. It doesn't. It merely suggests that till 2015, we'll all be haunted by the fear of such a meltdown. More tomorrow.

Fearful but Cheerful
|
More today about the Uranus-Pluto square. Some astrologers cite this as the reason why global financial collapse is inevitable. But it doesn't mean collapse is inevitable. It means 'fear of collapse' is inevitable. There's a big difference. I'll concede that the more we feel a fear, the more easily it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. I'll also agree that economic stability depends on confidence. But fear can often give rise to decisions that eventually provide far better mechanisms of protection. The world is afraid now. That's precisely why I predict a timely, positive evolution of global economic structures.

Your March Monthly Forecast
|
Sometimes, life seems like a dance where we all have to follow the rhythm of a band and a caller who shouts out the steps. Wherever we are, we can't ignore our cues. The planets require us to go forward, sideways or back. March brings another phase of retrograde motion for Mercury. We'll all have to deal with delays or difficulties of some kind in commerce or communication. The sense of frustration or impediment may be increased by the fact that Mars is retrograde too. But problems won't last forever and the dance can still be delightful!
