What process was followed? Rebecca Dear Rebecca, When Pluto was discovered, it wasn't a planetoid. It was a planet. The announcement made headlines worldwide. Walt Disney named Mickey Mouse's dog after it and scientists, who had just discovered a powerful new element, chose the word 'Plutonium' to describe this. Astrologers watched, discussed and debated, drawing on what they know of Pluto, the mythological figure. Gradually they reached a consensus. It symbolises humanity's collective 'darker side'. Demoted or not, most astrologers still hold this view of Pluto. Tuesday September 18 Wind of Change I'm a great believer in the power of intuition but I'm neither a psychic nor a clairvoyant. The predictions I make are always based on the positions of the planets, interpreted according to time-honoured, traditional rules. Several of my friends, though, pursue a more mystical path, allowing themselves to be guided by visions and feelings. Some of these more sensitive souls have told me they can really feel the 'rising energy' of the alignment between Pluto and Uranus. It is, they say, producing a wind of change that's starting to blow across the whole globe. More on this tomorrow. Wednesday September 19 T Square Now In June, you may recall, I told you about a series of seven powerful alignments, due to occur between then and 2015. The second in this set of 'right angles' from Uranus to Pluto is taking place now. It's rendered the more potent by the fact that Mercury is now directly opposite Uranus and thus forming a further right angle to Pluto from the other side of the zodiac circle. We astrologers call this a T-square. In my view, this speaks of pent-up energy being released to create sudden moments of awakening in the minds of millions. Thursday September 20 Upside of Downside I make it my business to be positive about astrological events and alignments. I don't 'do' doom and gloom. But I must mention the downside of the current series of seven right angles between Uranus and Pluto. The world last came under such an influence in the early 1930s when many economies came close to collapse and global conflicts arose, fed by racial hatred. History need not repeat itself but preventing this may require millions, worldwide to make a conscious contribution to a climate in which love and forgiveness are shown to be more powerful than fear and anger. Friday September 21 Culture Clash Recent news stories say plenty about the meaning of those seven 'squares' between Uranus and Pluto. Uranus has symbolised 'the ideal of democracy and the right to freedom of speech' ever since it was discovered just after the American Revolution and just before the French one. Pluto is all about passionately held convictions involving ultimate powers that must never be questioned. In astrology, a square (or right angle) is always interpreted as a portent of conflict. The current clash between the fundamental ethos of two different cultures is, I fear, likely to intensify before it eventually resolves. Around this time of year, many of us experience a powerful urge to rebalance arrangements and adjust our attitude to situations that have begun to seem disproportionately important. We find ourselves wanting to lead tidier lives. We start to consider where we stand, wondering who we stand there with and asking whether we should be standing anywhere else instead.
