PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY
December 31 2012 to January 6 2013

Monday December 31
Right on the Hogmanay
|
As I often point out, there's nothing astrologically special about New Year's Eve. The date changes, not because of some cosmic alignment but because we're following a rather questionable calendar system! And tonight, two traditions compete and conflict. Is it a time to make merry, celebrate, attend parties and overindulge? Or is it a time to make resolutions and commitments about what will be given up or taken up in the months to come. Allow yourself to enjoy this evening, whatever you do. In 2013, changes that can only benefit us will yet come naturally to all our lives.
UK residents please note I will be seeing in the New Year at Jools Holland's Hootenanny tonight on BBC2.

Happy New Year
|
Today, I shall resist the temptation to rant about the civil calendar, the real rhythm of the solar system and the ridiculous ways in which the two conflict. Let us, instead, give the benefit of the doubt to the conventional view. Let's agree that this really is the start of a new era, not just a moment when the calendar month happens to change. Is 2013 really going to be any different? Actually... yes! A series of unusual astrological alignments are due soon. They really do speak of the most wonderful dreams starting to come true. Happy New Year.

Trait Expectations
|
Hi Jonathan, You recently said that Jesus wasn't a Capricorn. As a Capricorn myself, I am curious. What trait would disqualify him from being a spiritual leader? Anthony
Dear Anthony, Your letter teaches me that I can be easily misunderstood and should choose my words more carefully. I was only saying that December 25 is just a date chosen by the church, not an actual anniversary. Nothing 'disqualifies' a Capricorn from such a destiny. One of the first things we learn at astrology school is that great saints (and indeed great sinners) are born under each and every sign.

Small Change
|
Great changes rarely occur in an instant. They dawn on the world slowly, creeping in at the edge of the horizon and seeping into the pool of the collective imagination. Only gradually do we realise that we are all starting to see the same possibilities, and excitement is justified. This year is still young. We shouldn't judge it from all that has happened so far or even from what's now cropping up. 2013 will be remembered as the time when an amazing comet of hope lit up the sky and gave millions a breathtaking vision of fresh possibility!

Out of the Ordinary
|
Towards the end of last year, I mentioned the end of the Mayan calendar and the so-called Galactic Alignment of December 21, explaining why neither of these were as final or as serious as they had been portrayed. But for somewhat different reasons, I agree with those who have proclaimed 2013 to be a year of great change. This year, millions will start to think differently about the way the world is being run. Unconventional alternative ideas will be embraced not just by oddball pioneers but by 'ordinary folk' who are suddenly determined to lead less ordinary lives.

Your Week Ahead
|
The New Year may start here... but it doesn't end here! We've still got many more months of discovery, realisation, awakening, recognition and transformation ahead - as signified by the forthcoming alignments between Pluto, Uranus and Jupiter. Remember that. In early January, many of us have a tendency to push ourselves too hard. We set resolutions, strive to keep them and then, when this proves difficult, we grow tense or, worse, so disappointed that we stop trying! Whatever you're trying to change in your life now, pace yourself! The important thing is just to continue to want to change it!
