PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

January 30 2012 to February 5 2012

Monday January 30
Greece Enlightening

Dear Jonathan,
How do you propose to benefit from your knowledge and insights in the future if we move on, as a race, from capitalism? Tim
Dear Tim,

Such a change will emerge through an evolution, not a revolution. I don't see it happening in my lifetime.
Dear Jonathan,
In a recent forecast, you attributed the phrase 'know thyself' to Socrates. Actually, it was Chilon of Sparta (6th century BC), who proclaimed that trying to 'know thyself' was one of the most difficult things to do. Nick
Dear Nick,
Did he add that it was also one of the most rewarding?

Tuesday January 31
Let It Bee

Dear Jonathan,
I agree with the beekeeper you mentioned recently. I kept bees for years and surrounded their hive with aromatic herbs. The bees rolled around on the plants, seemingly bathing, even when the plants were not flowering. I did not use chemicals and had healthy bees. Beekeepers who winter them over often give a syrup of white sugar, which I suspect is part of the problem. I shared the crop with them, leaving them some of their own honey. The chemical industry is taking over so many aspects of our lives. Even the bees are on drugs. Shelagh

Wednesday February 1
Serendipity Doo-Dah

Hi Jonathan,
Is winning the lottery written in your birth chart? Danielle

Hi Danielle,
That's a bit like asking if serious accidents are predicted in our full horoscopes? Some believe that every day brings us each a string of potential opportunities to benefit from 'serendipitous coincidence'. Also, about the same number of possible moments when we might slip, drop, fall or collide with something! The two, mostly, cancel each other out! We don't even notice this happening. Both types of event show up in a birth chart, but... well there's a very big but - as I shall explain tomorrow.

Thursday February 2
That's Your Lottery

Yesterday, a reader called Danielle asked if lottery wins are revealed in our full personal horoscopes? Actually, she asked me about 'substantial' wins, but I held that bit of her question back for today. The universe doesn't see 'big' and 'small' as we do. Even our own sense of what's important or trivial can vary moment by moment. Now, suppose every day brings us many lucky breaks and potential unfortunate accidents... though moments of good and bad luck cancel each other out, 'big' ones can easily negate 'small' ones - and vice versa. Plus, there's another challenge... which I'll tackle tomorrow.

Friday February 3
I Should Be So Lucky

Have you ever noticed how one person can become foxed by what looks, to you, like a minor problem, and someone else can seemingly sail safely through a storm? The cosmos, too, has a variable sense of proportion! It hands out potentially lucky breaks like sweets and is similarly 'generous' with trouble. Now suppose a disaster occurs only when there's a danger we don't have enough luck to avoid and a lottery win is simply a 'cosmic rescue' when we don't need rescuing! The factors involved aren't random but they fluctuate rapidly! Decoding them represents an epic challenge.

Your Week Ahead

Every so often, experts add an extra second to the day to ensure our time-keeping system stays accurate. I'm always amused by this. It makes me want to ask 'what do you intend to do with your extra blink?' Anyway, all our days are 3 minutes, 56 seconds too long. The 24-hour clock gives only a clumsy approximation of the Earth's actual rotation. Those minutes soon add up. That's partly why we have leap years. This week's powerful Full Moon may yet cause us all to feel as if a little more time might be very useful indeed.
