People always comment on how uncanny it is that we have so much in common, from interests to opinions to personalities. We refer to each other as twins. My mother, and my father's former boss were also born on the same day, about 300 miles apart. They send each other birthday cards but they could not be more dissimilar. I started studying astrology 33 years ago. I still consider myself a student. No matter how many books you read or lectures you attend, there's always something new to discover. So I tried to be open-minded when, recently, several worried readers wrote to ask about a Monster Moon. This is not a term I recognise from ancient literature. They never mentioned it at the Faculty of Astrological Studies. But it must exist because... an astrologer on the internet has mentioned it! And it is supposed to be bad! I've done some research. Tomorrow, I'll explain what I know about it. Wednesday March 27 Monster Moon Myth Tonight, as the Moon grows full, Venus, Mars and Uranus all appear to be near the Sun. Well, I say 'appear' but we won't actually see this because planets near the Sun can't be seen. Daylight drowns them out and then, as the Sun goes down, they go down too! They'll also form an approximate right angle to Pluto - again invisible, even at night, because Pluto is so small. I'm happy to agree this makes the Full Moon slightly more powerful than usual. But I still can't see why any serious astrologer would call it a Monster Moon. Thursday March 28 Honourable Discharge Dear Jonathan, You recently published several letters from readers reporting an ability to affect electrical equipment with their mind or mood. Do you think they are representative of the population in general or is there a larger than normal proportion amongst your readers? Perhaps you could get them all to work together on a project where this talent might make a big difference. You could, for example, collectively disable the missiles of North Korea! Friday March 29 Lunar Festivals The 'floating feast' of Easter is anchored, not to a date in the civil calendar, but a complicated formula involving the Equinox and Full Moon. Similar (but not identical) rules time the Jewish holiday, Pesach. You might expect the events always to coincide, especially as part of the Easter story involves a Passover Supper. But Easter is also connected to an ancient festival for the pagan fertility goddess, Ostara. Hence the eggs. Wednesday's Full Moon was also the trigger for Holi, the Hindu festival of colours. Saturday March 30 Your April Monthly Forecast The ancients believed that during a lunar eclipse, a giant invisible space dragon swallowed the moon. The ascending and descending 'lunar nodes' are still sometimes called the Dragon's Head and the Dragon's Tail. The partial eclipse on April 25 will be brief and bite-sized. It will look more as if the dragon is having a nibble than a gobble. But it should be visible from Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Like all eclipses, it symbolises a chance to reboot your life. Remember that resolution you couldn't quite keep in January? Maybe it's time to give it another go.
