PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

October 14 2013 to October 20 2013

Monday October 14
Bless My Soul

Hello Jonathan,
I often hear references to the term 'old soul'. What does it mean? Is it better to be an old soul than a 'new soul'? And how can I know how young or old my soul is? J
Dear J,
I can see why some people might think that a belief in astrology and a belief in reincarnation would go hand in hand but I have to ask, if every soul is eternal, how can any soul have an age? To me, the phrase has always been just a colourful way to say 'blessed with natural wisdom'.

Tuesday October 15
Spaced Out

Dear Jonathan, Although most astronomers think badly of astrology, I have a friend who owns a new age bookstore near the headquarters of NASA. Apparently, engineers love to peruse the books on the astrology shelves when they think no one is looking. Linda

Dear Linda,
How pleasing!

Hello Jonathan, A new planet has been discovered, named MOA-2011-BLG-322. It is eight times the size of Jupiter. Will it have any effect on horoscopes? Fiona

Dear Fiona,
This planet orbits another star, far away. By convention, astrological predictions are based only on objects in our own solar system.

Wednesday October 16
Nice Day for a Gemini/Scorpio Wedding?

Hi Jonathan,
Help! My daughter is getting married on June 14, 2014. She's a Gemini (like her dad), her fiance is a Scorpio, I'm a Libran. I've consulted an almanac that gives predictions for every day next year. Apparently, her outlook is awful. Please advise us. Rachel

Dear Rachel,

My advice is, be careful where you turn for advice! Astrologers are all colleagues, never competitors, but some publications with a heritage title don't identify the actual authors. I'd never trust an anonymous prediction. And I can see absolutely nothing wrong with the outlook for you all on that day.

Thursday October 17
Cosmic Timing

The Full Moon becomes 'fully full' tomorrow night at 23.38 GMT, which is short for Greenwich Mean Time. But as Greenwich is in the UK and the UK is currently on British Summertime, even the residents of Greenwich won't find the Moon fully full till 00.38 Saturday morning. This is one reason why people are trying to phase out the phrase GMT and replace it with UT (or Universal Time). But, of course, time is not universal, it is relative. The actual time of the Full Moon depends on whether you happen to be west or east of Britain!

The moon will be full around the globe at the following local times: Friday 4.38pm (Los Angeles); 7.38pm (NYC); 8.38pm Sao Paolo; and on Saturday at 00.38 (UK); 1.38am (Madrid, Cape Town); 5.08 (Delhi); 7.38am (Perth, Manila); 8.38am (Tokyo); 9.38am (Queensland); 10.08 (Adelaide); and 10.38am (Sydney, Melbourne); and 12.38 pm (Auckland).

Friday October 18
Full Moon Fever

Yesterday, I touched on the tricky topic of time zones and the even stickier subject of Daylight Saving Time. That's when countries put their clocks forward for several months each year. Astrologers regularly have to allow for all this. When people tell us what time they were born, we ask where, partly so we can convert the local time to 'Universal Time'. It's the same with Full Moons. For places west of the UK, the Moon is fully full today. For those further east, it's Saturday morning. And wherever you are, a Full Moon weekend is probably a crazy one - especially as this Full Moon is also a Lunar Eclipse and a penumbral eclipse at that.

Saturday October 19
Your Week Ahead

The zodiac, like every circle, contains 360 degrees. The Sun travels round it at the rate of roughly a degree per day. Mercury usually shows the Sun a clean pair of winged heels, travelling much faster. But two or three times a year, Mercury slows to a snail's pace before appearing to change direction. Astrologers then issue warnings about missed and mixed messages or trouble with traffic, transport or technology. But Mercury's change of direction this week really just means that wherever a process has been moving too fast for comfort, it can now been constructively revisited and reviewed.

Sunday October 20
Your Week Ahead - Love Focus

Remember, your Love Forecast today doesn't just cover romance. A love forecast may also have something to say about your family life, your closest friendships and even some of your most important working relationships.
