PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY November 24 2014 to November 30 2014 Monday November 24 Cosmic Billboards Last week, I said that the recent Rosetta mission to land a craft on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko has only a subtle symbolic implication. Other astrologers clearly disagree. I have heard some suggest, disapprovingly, that it's akin to genetic engineering. But surely, 'to go messing with nature' is, in itself, only human nature! Just as the lunar landings made the Moon seem less distant and therefore, more of a force with which people might negotiate, perhaps we now should view comets less as indisputable omens portending a package of inevitable change and more as cosmic billboards, advertising 'serving suggestions.' Tuesday November 25 Speedy Uranus To reiterate a point I've made often lately, astrologers have good reason to keep up to date with the latest news in astronomy. I must thank a reader called Duncan for highlighting new research involving the planet Uranus. It looks as if different parts of this heavenly body rotate at different speeds. Yes, you did read that correctly. The idea becomes easier to accept when we stop to remember that it is a 'gas giant'. This may explain why a Uranian influence tends to be so variable. For some it brings swift, sudden change. For others, slow disruption. Wednesday November 26 Planet Tunes In my recent comments about the Rosetta mission, I've been treading perilously close to the disputed border between astronomy and astrology. Astronomers focus on what heavenly bodies are made of, how far away they are and what this may tell us about the composition of the cosmos. Astrologers use that same information to deduce mystical meaning and subtle suggestions with inference for humans. Modern astronomers may be compared to piano tuners who are keen to know that the keys play all the right notes but laugh scornfully at the very suggestion that there's such a thing as a concerto! Thursday November 27 Hypotonuse Flash Once upon a time, astronomers were also astrologers. If you knew what was happening in the sky, you naturally held a view about what this 'meant'. The Greeks, for all their pioneering logic, happily embraced esotericism. Indeed, Pythagoras (remember the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides?) was a classic mystic visionary. For centuries, the tradition continued. Galileo cast birthcharts. Kepler, 'father of modern astronomy', specialised in reading horoscopes to make accurate weather forecasts. Tomorrow, I'll explain where the separation began... and how the current stand-off started. Friday November 28 Precession Profession Astrologers deeply respect the facts of astronomy. We take these so seriously that we wince when some astronomers, eager to rubbish our work, suggest we are too stupid to grasp basic issues arising from the precession of the equinoxes. The two subjects were once one. Even Sir Isaac Newton was a mystical stargazer but the legacy of his work led to a split. Since the late 18th century, empiricists have come to despise esotericists. I don't, sadly, predict a healing any time soon. But in other areas, this weekend's sextile from Mars to Saturn offers pleasing possibilities for bridge-building. Saturday November 29 Your December Monthly Forecast Another year is nearly over. Are you feeling any wiser? While we all definitely gain more experience the more time we spend on earth, that doesn't always translate into a calm, relaxed attitude or a sense of confident understanding. Yet key cosmic factors are changing this December. If the human race is on a journey towards greater maturity, the current cosmic outlook implies a collective 'growth spurt'. And if that's the direction we're all going in this month, individually we must be heading there too! Which, in theory at least, suggests a less stressful holiday season than usual ahead!
