Monday November 2
Gender Signs
|
Dear Jonathan,
I am a female Virgo. I consider myself to be typical of my sign. I also like to believe that I am a reasonably good, kind person. I have a Virgo male relative who is not a typical Virgo, and he is most definitely NOT a good kind person. Is there a gender issue with the star signs? Audrey
Dear Audrey,
There is, of course, a difference between males and females of every sign. Sometimes it is subtle, sometimes strong. But it is not the answer to your core question. I'll start attempting to address that tomorrow.

Here Comes the Judge
|
Dear Jonathan,
I consider myself typical of my sign. I also like to believe I am a reasonably good, kind person. I have a relative of the same sign who is not typical. He is most definitely NOT a good, kind person. Audrey
Dear Audrey,
Yesterday, I pointed out that such a difference cannot be explained by gender. Today, I'd like to be brave and ask "Do any of us believe that we are anything other than 'good, kind people?" I must also ask, "Are any of us truly qualified to judge ourselves?" I'll return to this again, tomorrow.

Judgement Dread
|
Dear Jonathan,
I consider myself typical of my sign. I also like to believe I am a reasonably good, kind person. I have a relative of the same sign who is not typical. He is most definitely NOT a good, kind person. Audrey
Dear Audrey,
I keep returning to your question because it raises so many issues. Yesterday, I asked "Do any of us believe we are anything other than good, kind people and how can we judge ourselves?" If the answer to this second question is 'we can't', how can we trust our judgement of others? More tomorrow!

A Typicality Topic
|
Dear Jonathan,
I consider myself typical of my sign. I also like to believe I am a reasonably good, kind person. I have a relative of the same sign who is not typical. He is not a good, kind person. Audrey
Dear Audrey,
I've been returning to your letter all week. Yesterday, I questioned whether any of us can be sure of how 'good and kind' we are. If we can't, how can we say for certain whether anyone else is? I don't mean to question your every statement but tomorrow, we ought to tackle the topic of 'typicality'.

What Are We Like?
|
Dear Jonathan,
I consider myself typical of my sign. I have a male relative of the same sign who is not typical. Audrey
Dear Audrey,
Thank you for a letter that has given me a new point to make each day this week. I've saved the best till last. None of us are entirely typical of our sign. Our signs don't describe what we are truly like. They describe what we would like to imagine we are like! That's why we identify with them so easily... and why we sometimes find it hard to see similar traits in others!

Your Week Ahead
|
This week's New Moon places the two luminaries in conjunction with Mercury and these three, in turn, form an encouraging alignment to Jupiter. We might be entitled to interpret this as a highly auspicious event were it not for the fact that the degree of the ecliptic that now hosts the Sun and Moon's alignment is one that my medieval predecessors regarded guardedly. They felt it had magical properties yet they feared that it could give rise to oversensitivity. This then, looks set to be a fine week for all who can control their own propensity to worry unnecessarily.
