The posters of my musical heroes, which adorned my teenage walls, showed them drinking and smoking. When I think back, I can't help imagining how bad they must have smelt! These days, although they're sometimes caught worse for wear, it's rare to see the likes of Taylor Swift or Harry Styles with cigarettes. It shows how quickly how what's deemed to be 'glamorous' can change. On World No Tobacco Day it's worth considering the messages we project. Doing the 'right' thing will lead to progress.

Cabin Fever

It's half-term for me; and, as the UK cautiously steps out of lockdown, there are a few more options to help stave off school holiday cabin fever. Unfortunately, with Mercury retrograde there's a risk that I'll misread opening times and still end up with a grumpy child! But to counteract the mischief this wayward planet devises, Mars and Neptune's harmonious link promotes serenity in the face of frustration. Whether or not our problems are of our own making, the solutions lie in our hands.

In the USA, people are celebrating National Leave The Office Early Day. And, rather than being unamused, bosses might be wise to humour their employees. This cheeky initiative was introduced by an award-winning productivity expert; which goes to show how (particularly with Mercury retrograde) the best ideas might not always be the most obvious! Meanwhile, Venus enters Cancer, where it encourages us to stop questioning our choices and to enjoy the comforts of home.

Maturity and authority can be sources of playfulness. When I fancy an evening unwinding, I don't want to be drinking apple juice; but if those apples are aged and fermented, then that's a different matter! When the Romans invaded Britain they discovered the Celts were fond of cider. So, to ingratiate themselves as rulers, they introduced orcharding techniques to improve production. On World Cider Day, those in authority need to remember that fun is important. Enjoying life isn't a privilege... it's a duty.

Saturday is World Environment Day, and Sunday is the anniversary of the D-Day landings. So, just before we celebrate the turning of the tide of a great battle, we concentrate on raising awareness for this century's greatest threat. As combating the pandemic has reminded us, when the chips are down, human beings come together. This weekend, Mercury calls us to communicate with compassion. When we join forces, we have the power to solve 'impossible' problems.

It has been a long time since I last watched the Moon obscure the Sun from my own home; and perhaps longer since the world was in such dire need of a sign of hope. This week, the light of the partial Solar Eclipse helps us discover innovative ways to navigate out of the pervasive fog that has been obscuring our lives recently. And, since the Mars/Pluto link urges us to act on impulse, it also ensures a sense of agency. Channelled correctly, the energy can inspire powerful transformation.
